ABSTRACT

Our identity, who we are, is a culturally embedded concept and one that plays a part in our unconscious process.

Transferential and countertransferential responses stem from frames of reference that include who we are racially, culturally and individually. It is important for all therapists to have an understanding and awareness of all their ego state responses so that we become aware of our impact on a client who may represent the `other'. This includes having an awareness of our own racial identity, prejudices and biases.
