ABSTRACT

Bordin (1979) developed a formulation of the dimensions of the working alliance in psychotherapy, which he identi®ed as comprising three main components: tasks, goals and bonds (Bordin, 1994). There has been considerable research on this formulation and it is now widely accepted that therapist±client agreement on the tasks, goals and bonds is a reliable predictor of strength of working alliance and as such can be seen as a reliable predictor of positive outcome and successful therapy (Horvath and Greenberg, 1994). Bordin's formulation can be used to establish, enhance and develop the working alliance.
