ABSTRACT

Using metaphors The word metaphor comes from the rich language of Ancient Greece and is made

up of meta, ‘to change and go beyond’, and pherein ‘to bear’ or carry. Metaphors have the power to carry us beyond ordinary ways of looking at the world through

changing and enhancing the meanings of things. They are sometimes taught simply

as one of the common figures of speech; as a comparison along with similes,

personification and suchlike. However, the concept of metaphor is fundamental to

the powerful use of language.
