ABSTRACT

Teaching outside classroom settings is one way to ensure that democratic education is accessible to everyone. It also affords a marvelous opportunity for teachers to hone communication skills different from those which may apply in the classroom setting. There are many ways to develop a place of learning outside the classroom. One direction my work has taken that has given me a different audience has been the writing of children books. I began writing children's books in response to parents, mostly black mothers, who shared with me that while my theory books helped young adults decolonize their minds they wanted me to write books for children that would also challenge racism and sexism.
