ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Project for Public Spaces (PPS) selections that summarize the ideas of what placemaking is and how it can contribute to the future of cities worldwide. Placemaking is different from urban design. Good urban design is fundamental to placemaking and PPS. PPS emphasizes the importance of citizen participation in placemaking. Placemaking is both an overarching idea and a hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or region. Rooted in community-based participation, Placemaking involves, planning, design, management and programming of public spaces. Community input is essential to the Placemaking process. Placemaking requires and supports great leadership and action on all levels. It strikes a balance between the built, the social, the ecological and even the spiritual qualities of a place. There is a substantial literature about the relationship of public art and placemaking. An effective Placemaking process capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, ultimately creating good public spaces promoting people's health, happiness, and well being.
