ABSTRACT

Fossils, particularly echinoderms, from the Ludlovian (Whitcliffian) Burgsvik Sandstone of Gotland, Sweden, are fairly rare. Only six crinoid species and one asteroid (not described) have hitherto been found. Therefore the find of a crinoid – starfish assemblage with associated bryozoans and brachiopods close to the top of the Burgsvik Formation is important. The animals have been ripped up from their attachments offshore during a storm, transported on-shore and then deposited in very shallow water close to land. The crinoid crowns have very thin and delicate plates, causing them to crack at compaction.
