ABSTRACT

The DSM system calls these disorders pervasive developmental disorders, and five distinct clinical entities are recognized: autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder, Rett’s disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified (NOS). Pervasive developmental disorder, NOS is diagnosed for individuals with some features of autism but not to the degree in which the person meets criteria for autistic disorder or Asperger’s disorder. Individuals with Asperger’s disorder have severe and sustained impairment in social interactions and demonstrate a pattern of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. The autism spectrum disorders are neuropsychiatric conditions that are characterized by patterns of difficulties in social interactions, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Infants with autism have been described as very content and happy babies who made few demands on the parents. Behavioral support and intervention are among the cornerstones of treatment for a person with an autistic disorder.
