ABSTRACT

A mental health crisis can occur at any time. A psychiatrist must be available in different settings to have an understanding of how to best manage these situations. Some examples of crises include suicidal statements, homicidal statements, self-injurious behaviors, and physical aggression. If the suicide assessment is being conducted following a suicide attempt, the suicide assessment can be more difficult. If the suicidal assessment is being completed after there have been known suicidal statements, the examiner must first work to establish a rapport to allow the adolescent to feel comfortable divulging internal thoughts. A mental health assessment will help the psychiatrist continue to understand the patterns of the behavior, including frequency and emotional triggers. The primary intervention should be in the mental health system with backup supports provided through the guidance office. Self-injurious behavior is a concern and can signify underlying mental health difficulties, which must be assessed and treated within the mental health setting.
