ABSTRACT

The development of anxiety disorders is complex. Treatment interventions for anxiety disorders can help with the reduction of behavior. Several of the anxiety disorders have common presentations and will be reviewed together. These include generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, and panic disorder. Youth with separation anxiety disorder experience excessive anxiety about separation from the home or from those to whom they are attached. Social phobia is characterized by an individual’s feeling uncomfortable and scared in social settings or performance situations. To make a diagnosis of a specific phobia, the clinician must be certain that the fear is more than what can be expected for the developmental age. Individuals with panic disorder also report a general high degree of anxiety that is not associated with the fear of a recurrent panic attack, although this is not diagnostic.
