ABSTRACT

Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was the first Englishman to write a book solely on criminology. Although he derived nearly all of the data for The Criminal from works by Lombroso and other criminal anthropologists, he was able to synthesize this information in a more readable style than that of most of the researchers themselves. Moreover, The Criminal, as the first purely criminological text in English, became the source to which readers in Great Britain and America turned when they wanted to learn about the new science of the criminal. It was reprinted numerous times on both sides of the Atlantic and was one of the most significant works of criminal anthropology after those of Lombroso himself.
