ABSTRACT

So far in this book I have focused on features of semantic prosody (i) which are shared by all descriptions of it (Chapter 2), and (ii) which are not shared by all descriptions, receiving differing degrees of emphasis from one account to the next (Chapters 3 and 4). In the next three chapters I shall consider semantic prosody in connection with the broader issues of the use, role and infl uence of corpus data. The current chapter considers the link between semantic prosody and corpus data as envisaged by scholars who have contributed to the subject. Chapter 6 also discusses this link, but with particular reference to data supplied by the concordance. Chapter 7 takes up the question of the role of intuition and introspection in corpus analyses.
