ABSTRACT
Most defi nitions and descriptions of semantic prosody, be they detailed accounts or just passing references, embrace the idea that prosodic meaning is somehow attached or transferred to an item, the process of attachment/transfer usually being expressed in metaphorical terms. It will be argued later that the process described rests squarely upon diachronic assumptions.
