ABSTRACT

The responsibility for a successful induction is shared between certain key players such as teachers, the local authority and teacher’s school. Teachers should be actively involved in the planning of monitoring and development programme, fully participating in it and taking increasing responsibility for professional development as the induction period progresses. The governing body must be fully aware of the implications of employing a newly qualified teacher (NQT) and ensure that the key personnel involved in the induction of NQTs are in a position to perform their duties to the highest standards. There are many distinct advantages for NQTs undergoing statutory induction, providing all concerned are aware of their responsibilities and are keen to maximize the benefits of the situation. The timetable reductions should be evenly distributed throughout the induction period. The best way to view assessment meetings is as markers of teacher’s progress throughout their induction period.
