ABSTRACT

Becoming a part of a school or college for the first time as a qualified teacher is a key transition in career. Good staff relations have a knock-on effect throughout the school – a cohesive team will be less open to pupil manipulation and more receptive to the dissemination of good practice. The school will have set procedures for dealing with suspected abuse and will pass any information on to the social services department. The governing body of a school commonly has the responsibility for developing a school pay policy and reviewing teachers' salaries annually. The local authority then has the duty to act on the decisions made by the governing body and arrange for payments to be made to the teachers of the school. A school's governing body consists of appointed and elected governors. Governors are volunteers and are responsible for a school's budget.
