ABSTRACT

The system of tutoring delivered through tutor groups or houses is one way in which a school cares for its pupils. Listening is an important aspect of tutoring, and knowing how to listen is an essential skill. Tutors often have to inject a sense of reality into fraught and emotional circumstances. A tutor can help to minimize what can be the cruelty of school life for children by boosting their self-esteem. In some schools, parents are invited to speak to form tutors as well as subject teachers at parents' evenings. Approachability is an important characteristic for a good tutor to have. Tutors are obliged, as part of their role as teachers in safeguarding children's welfare, to observe tutees for signs of neglect and abuse. A great deal of success in tutoring will come as a result of trial and error and it is not possible to present a winning formula for this complicated task.
