The local environment
In January 2006, the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) published the Learning outside the classroom manifesto. The manifesto aims to involve as many agencies as possible in providing learning outside the classroom, stating that ‘Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances’ (p. 1). The learning outside the classroom they have in mind is ‘The use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning [that provide] memorable learning experiences . . . which affect our behaviour, lifestyle and work . . . and influence our values and the decisions we make’ (p. 1).
