ABSTRACT

This quote from Kurland and Salmon highlights the power of group work as well as the importance and relevance for social workers to conduct group work with clients within the communities social workers serve. For this chapter, the “community” references individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or questioning (LGBTQ). As LGBTQ individuals comprise a significant minority of the individuals we work with, it is essential to have a sense of the issues that this community faces and may be relevant in the particular members’ lives. Group work as a modality in social work relies on the assumption that the nature of the group is a powerful tool that provides support and promotes change for the individuals who comprise it as well as the group as a whole. Therefore, combining group work practice with this population has the promise of empowering LGBTQ individuals, assisting them with working through challenges and problems, and celebrating their successes.
