ABSTRACT

There are 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities in China. They account for 8.4 percent of the population. Although ethnic minorities are concentrated in the 12 western provinces, these provinces constitute 64 percent of the national territory.2 Six western provinces share land borders with neighboring countries. The ethnic issue thus has broad ramifications on China’s national unity and security.
