ABSTRACT

In many countries around the world children represent the majority of the population; globally, they represent approximately 30 per cent of the population. Yet children’s voices are largely absent from political processes, and they have little influence over the development of legislation and policies and the allocation of resources to programmes that directly impact on their lives. Children’s interests are often ignored by those in power; they are not regarded as full citizens, and are thus excluded from many of the political processes that would enable them to participate fully in society.
