Cosmetic Surgeons of the Social Darwin, Freud, and Wells and the Limits of Sympathy on The Island of Dr. Moreau

This essay revisits an imperialist Gothic novel of terror in a time and place in which the terror returns home, though where or what home can be must for the time being remain an open question. How might a quite (in the British rather than American sense of the word) white African post(settler) colonial turned queer diasporic literary critic teaching in Texas attempt such an encounter? I perform this situa tional hand-wringing at the outset in order simultaneously to claim and resist the impersonal, universal, academic voice, a voice not unre lated to the central problem in The Island o f Dr. Moreau of making humans out of nature in one’s own image.
