Alcohol is part of the social and cultural fabric of Judeo-Christian societies and is enjoyed by the majority of the UK adult population. It is actively promoted in many cultural, social and religious circumstances, and assists in supporting national economies through taxation (Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit 2004). However, alcohol is not generally perceived as a psychoactive substance with addictive potential resulting in physical, psychological, social, economic and legal consequences. Public-health problems associated with alcohol consumption have reached alarming proportions, and alcohol has become one of the most important risks to health globally (WHO 2004).
