ABSTRACT

In the current climate of the pattern of alcohol drinking and drug-taking behaviours, health education, prevention and harm reduction increasingly form part of the role of the health and social care professionals. Every encounter with a patient affords an opportunity for health and social care professionals to transmit knowledge about healthcare and harm reduction in relation to tobacco smoking, alcohol, psychoactive drugs and sexual health. The prevention of alcohol and drug misuse is the promotion of constructive lifestyles to delay or avoid the onset of alcohol and drug misuse in the general population and is achieved through the application of multiple strategies.
