ABSTRACT
My interest in researching the field of marital behaviour in Japan originally came about through one of my Japanese girlfriends, named Sayuri (39), who is currently working as an associate professor at a women’s junior college in Japan. When I first met her, more than a decade ago, she was cohabiting with her boyfriend and at that time she did not see the point in getting officially married.
