Italyduringtheconsolidationoffascistpower,inRussiaduringthe periodofrevolutionaryexperimentationandinFranceduringthe halcyondaysofthepopularfront.Preciselyforthisreason,the apparentlyanomalous,sometimescapriciousbehaviourofthe Sorelianperspectiveundervaryingsocialconditions,thereisaneed todistinguishthesociologyofpoliticalideasfrombothpolitical sociologyandphilosophyingeneral.Beyondthis,thereisaneedto copewiththeinteractionofthesociologyofknowledgeandthe politicsofmassaction.Sorel'sthoughtexistsatalevelwhereits truthsaresubordinatetoitsfunctions.Thisformsthecentreofour effortstosumuptheSorelianlegacy.
