ABSTRACT
Water bodies are also of considerable signifi cance in the Middle East. In many ways, the Gulf is perceived as the core of the Middle East. It is bounded by eight Middle Eastern littoral states. The Rimland is marked by fi ve seas: the Mediterranean, the Black, the Caspian, the Arabian and the Red seas and characteristics of these infl uence the Middle East (Map 62).
