ABSTRACT

It’s Sunday, my day off: my brain feels fresh and revitalised. I take advantage of this by planning the coming week and getting ready to review the staffing and budget sheets. I need to assess, once again, why the pharmacy budget is over the limit this month. At times like this, I question the connection I now have with the women I serve. A quick reflection of my management role, however, reassures me that, although some aspects of my role are indirect, they do have a major impact on the service and our working environment. This energises me to complete the tasks as, after 13 years of working as a midwife and midwife manager, I am still passionate about improving midwifery practice and the services for women. My ardent interest in midwifery, however, began years before my midwifery training . . . .
