ABSTRACT
The Built Artifacts Of Development systems, the highway interchange or the suburban tract house may be described formally or scrutinized aesthetically, but their dominant architecture may be best identified by protocols expressing the constraints governing timing, organization and interactivity. For instance, the process of assembling residential fabric has often resembled that of agricultural production, where large numbers of houses are executed simultaneously in uniform fields. And it is the architecture or format of that process which may be the chief determinant of spatial and material consequences, not the appearance or shape of a residential subdivision.
