A history of Working Title Films In 1982, when the British actor and screenwriter Collin Welland collected his Academy Award for the screenplay of Chariots of Fire (UK 1981, Enigma/Twentieth Century Fox, Director: Hugh Hudson) he famously announced, ‘The British are coming!’ The British film industry was in a slump, with homegrown production down to two films a year, and Welland’s triumphant announcement quickly proved to be markedly premature.
