The Reception of Leibniz’s Philosophy in the Twentieth Century

Comprehensively Leibnizian philosophical views did not fi nd many advocates in the twentieth century. But if we measure philosophers’ reputations by the quantity and quality of work published about them by historians of philosophy, we must surely conclude that no pre-Kantian modern philosopher’s reputation stood higher than Leibniz’s in the twentieth century. In these remarks I refl ect briefl y on why that has been so and on some of the main trends in what has been an exceptionally rich secondary literature.
