ABSTRACT

WESTERN AND DIASPORIC BUDDHISM The term ‘Western Buddhism’ refers to

Buddhism as it has developed and is

practised outside of the Asian geo-

graphic and cultural context. ‘Diasporic

Buddhism’ refers to Asian Buddhism as

it is practised outside of Asia: that is, in

Europe, North and South America,

Australia and Africa. There are, of

course, a number of commonalities

between the two and there has been

mutual influence but there are some dif-

ferences as well.
