ABSTRACT

Collective identity has been theorized upon in a plethora of contexts and meanings. Rogers Brubaker and Frederick Cooper stress that the concept of identity has been stretched to the point of semantic emptiness by a wide range of approaches within social science. They criticize the situation whereby ‘strong’ versions of identity, which point to a fundamental and durable sense of selfhood, have been replaced by ‘weak’ versions that emphasize fluidity, complexity and context sensitivity of identities rather than resilient and stable forms of identity, including collective identity.1
