ABSTRACT

Linguistic diversity is a fact of life in many countries around the world, including our own. As a matter of fact, if all native Spanish-speakers in the United States were considered a country, it would be the flfth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, yet our society is also among the most monolingual on the globe, with a great many people able to speak only English. Because it is the language of power, it is possible to remain monolingual in the United States and yet be successful in life. This is not so in many other countries, where being bilingual or multilingual is essential.
