The Dibidi Story
It’s time now to tell the true meaning of DbD. As you know, the exoteric meaningis Doing by Doing, which is the basis of my philosophy and training method. Butthere is an esoteric meaning that only those who have taken DbD are aware of. In 1954, I lived in a loft in New York’s Lower Manhattan, in a very run-down district that no longer exists, in a condemned building that was going to be destroyed. My posse at the time consisted of Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Bob Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, and their whole entourage. One day, Earle Brown, Carolyn Brown’s composer husband (Carolyn was Merce’s star dancer), told me his cat had a litter and that he would give me one of the kittens. I came and chose a female who had a very peculiar look in her eyes, and I called her Dibidi. At the time, I also had a boy cat named Tioutik, given to me by Ray Johnson, the artist. Dibidi was supposed to become Tioutik’s girlfriend, however they never connected on that level, but rather platonically as siblings.
