ABSTRACT

Introduction In our quest to understand if practising acts of piety would lead to social distancing, we have finally arrived at the body itself. To recapitulate, our interest has been in how religiosity might lead individuals to physically and socially create social distance between themselves and the religiously impure. In the previous chapters on dining and education, we have shown how pious Muslims managed their religiosity within a secular society by performing various forms and degrees of social distancing. For dining, we saw pious Muslims practising defensive forms of distancing in order to continue participating in public life while maintaining their religiosity. However, on education and educational issues, because of concerns about the lack of religiosity in public schools, some have chosen to place their children within the safe comfort of the madrasahs.
