ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the use of housing as a driver of wider urban regeneration objectives in the UK. The chapter traces the changing nature and scale of public and private investment in housing. It also highlights the controversies associated with housing-led regeneration such as unsustainability, exclusion and affordability within the housing market. The chapter also deals with the much-debated issue of the gentrification of central cities, and notes some international examples of this process.
