ABSTRACT

Feature writers, as well as all other journalists at The Washington Post, depend on research for the ultimate success of their stories. Research can provide vital background and depth, identify sources, and generally prepare writers for key interviews. Feature writers rely on research both before and after the writing process, but it is the research in early stages of story crafting and reporting that can shape the stories more than fact-checking after the story is finished, says Washington Post news researcher Julie Tate (Canby & Semonche, 2008).
