ABSTRACT

Just what is a human-interest article? Human-interest features actually carry several labels. Some publications just call it a human-interest narrative. Some label it a true-life drama story. Certainly Miami Herald sportswriter Michelle Kaufman’s work illustrates what these types of stories seek to accomplish. Kaufman has been a reporter and writer for more than 20 years. She is a Miami native and graduated from the University of Miami in 1987 with a double major in Journalism and English. Her career began at the St. Petersburg Times, where she covered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was one of the only women covering the National Football League at that time. From there she went to the Detroit Free Press, where she spent seven years before returning home to The Miami Herald in 1996. She has covered ten Olympics, four World Cups, numerous Wimbledons, French Opens, U.S. Opens, numerous NCAA Final Fours, Super Bowls, Pan Am Games, the World Series, and the National Basketball Association Finals. She also occasionally teaches a sportswriting course at the University of Miami. She has been given national writing awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, Michigan Associated Press, and Florida Sports Writers Association, and a National Headliner Award.
