ABSTRACT

On other occasions, you might not join an existing group but form a new one. For example, students form groups to work on an assignment, or teams in a company are formed to do a project. These groups will change over time: People get to know one another, certain norms and procedures become accepted, and so on. This is the second topic of the chapter. One other way in which groups develop is that after a while different group members occupy different roles within the group and some members acquire status and in¯uence while others do not. For example, someone in a sports team becomes the team captain. These topics will be discussed in the third section of this chapter.
