ABSTRACT

The radical feminism of the past, in vogue when Jay Haley wrote his paper, was one in which activists demanded egalitarian relationships. Radical feminists, who were extraordinarily sensitive to perceived power imbalances, demanded that men and women be seen and treated as equal in every respect. One should emphasize, of course, that few women therapists are feminists, just as are few men. There are supervisors who say that helping a woman therapist recover from a feminist ideology is part of basic training in therapy. The psychodynamic and feminist orientations offer new and interesting explanations of many of life’s mysteries and the history of man and womankind. Biology is the basic bedrock on which to build agreements when one is discussing child-raising issues with feminists. Feminists who are family therapists have seen inside the structure of families and know that women are in charge in the family.
