ABSTRACT

Jay Haley was describing an approach in which the therapist strived for results and made things both simple and elegant, and he received many objections and much questioning of his results when he reported them in presentations. The fact that many clinicians cannot criticize psychotherapy in a competent manner is because of lack of experience. To become a successful critic, one must realize that therapy always consists of polarized approaches. To become a successful critic, one must realize that therapy always consists of polarized approaches. A therapist will offer a case where he exuded self-sacrifice. Some therapists emphasize a professional stance and a set of specific operations to achieve a therapeutic goal, while others tend to emphasize joining their patients in common humanity. At times one can face a more formidable challenge when a Network Therapist presents a case where he treated the nuclear family, extended kin, and all the other significant people involved.
