ABSTRACT

The growing literature on transportation, the environment, and safety attests to the importance that transportation professionals and decision makers-as well as the public at large-ascribe to these issues. The reasons are quite obvious: The impact of environmental degradation, global warming, and air and water pollution on health, together with the human and economic costs of accidents, have all achieved prominence on the public agenda. Moreover, it is universally recognized that transportation is a major contributor to these maladies.
