ABSTRACT

Relationships change. Many changes are subtle, whereas others represent unmistakable and qualitative shifts in relationship definition. Although the development of a romantic relationship might occur in any number of ways, a simple hypothetical example might include three qualitative changes. The first major change might occur when two people meet and talk for the first time (i.e., a shift from strangers to acquaintances). A second major change might occur as the acquaintances communicate regularly over time and get to know and like each other (i.e., a shift from acquaintanceship to friendship). The final change might involve the discovery and consummation of mutual romantic interest (i.e., a shift from a friendship to a romantic relationship).
