ABSTRACT

My subject in this chapter is the vast and ancient topic of love. I consider the question: `What is love?' and although my viewpoint is psychoanalytic, I am sometimes critical of the psychoanalytic perspective. In writing the chapter, I have drawn on my own experience ± of having been a child who was more or less loved, an adolescent who thought he was not, a man who found that he could be, a husband and father who loved as well as he could, and a romantic lover who has fallen in and out of love on more than one occasion.
