ABSTRACT
Aristotle's Poetics (350 BC/1983) was a major work of the classical era and is still discussed by philosophers and classical scholars. Among other things, it sets out the ®gures of speech a poet can use with their differing poetic effects. My aim in this chapter is related though less ambitious, namely to consider different forms of language that analysts use in talking to their patients. I shall discuss this topic further in chapters 7 and 8.
