ABSTRACT

Over the past twenty years tourism development as a whole has been positive in Africa, and during the 1990s tourism grew on an average at an annual rate of 6.2 per cent in contrast to 4.3 per cent for the world. The World Travel and Tourism Council reports that travel and tourism in subSaharan Africa in 2007 is expected to generate US$ 90.1 billion of economic activity, and to account for 8.1 per cent of GDP and 10.4 million jobs (5.9% of total employment). Between 2008 and 2017 the industry is expected to grow by 4.5 per cent per annum (in real terms) between 2008 and 2017. However, in 2007 the total demand represented just 1.3 per cent of world market share (WTTC, 2007).
