ABSTRACT

If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention, than to any other talent.

Isaac Newton (1642-1727), mathematician and physicist1

‘You first need exercises which will help you to take your mind off things you shouldn’t be looking at or thinking about and, second, exercises so you can concentrate inwardly on the things the role needs’.2 What Stanislavski is talking about here is Attention or what he sometimes refers to as concentration. The Circles of Attention that Stanislavski provided his readers with to help them, work like imaginary static ripples emanating from the actor in increasing circumferences encompassing him or herself, other objects, characters, and ultimately the whole stage.
