ABSTRACT

Ansel Adams Elementary School is a fairly large elementary school located in a suburban community of about 90,000 people. Ansel Adams Elementary is located in the very northeast corner of the city. As a result, the majority of the students are eligible for free lunch or reduced lunch, most of the students are Latino, and a majority of these students are considered to be English-language learners. The surrounding neighborhood around the school is considered to be dangerous. With the economic downturn, problems in the community and school have gone from bad to worse. Many children are deeply affected by the loss of income in their households. Through a brief literature review, background experience, and parental input, school psychologists' working group is able to identify a number of potential risk and protective factors associated with concerning behaviors identified at Ansel Adams Elementary School. Clearly, community factors are placing these students at risk.
