ABSTRACT

Universities as institutions have a responsibility to ensure that students who choose to study with them can achieve a recognised and accredited award that is meaningful to the outside world. In a globally competitive university market, potential students can choose to study almost anywhere they wish, so long as they can afford to pay the relevant fees. It is therefore extremely important for national systems of higher education to inspire confidence that the quality of provision in universities is high. This chapter will explore how this process is undertaken, focusing principally on the United Kingdom but with short case studies for comparison outlining the approaches in three other nations: Denmark, the Republic of Ireland and the United States of America.
