ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the nature of links between citizenship and history. The term ‘history’ is used broadly to refer both to the development of a historical dimension within citizenship lessons and the making of cross-curricular links to citizenship within history lessons. Making links with history holds a great deal of potential for citizenship teaching. When taught well, connections can serve to enhance pupil learning in both subjects, and this chapter sets out the foundations that are likely to underpin such positive practice. The relationship between citizenship and history is not, however, unproblematic. You will need to think very carefully about how particular topics and themes covered in lessons can enable pupils to achieve learning outcomes that incorporate both a citizenship and a historical dimension. For this reason, the chapter also raises some critical issues that you are likely to face when establishing cross-curricular links.
