ABSTRACT

The selected-response item format is the best choice for test developers interested in efficient, effective measurement of cognitive achievement or ability. This statement is supported by approximately 90 years of research and development activities for the selected-response format (Downing, 2002a). Although selected-response formats are certainly not without their critics, most of this criticism follows from examples of poorly written items and is not attributable to the selected-response item form per se (Downing, 2002c).
